Complete kaomoji guide

What kaomoji are—and how to choose the right text face

Kaomoji are expressions assembled from ordinary Unicode characters. Their name comes from the Japanese words kao, meaning face, and moji, meaning character. A face such as (^▽^) uses brackets for its outline, marks for its eyes, and a central symbol for its mouth. More elaborate designs add arms, hearts, stars, tears, animal ears, or props. Because the expression is made from text rather than an uploaded image, you can copy and paste it into many of the same places you would type a sentence.

Kaomoji, emoticons, and emoji are related—but not identical

“Emoticon” is the broad name for an emotion represented with typed characters. Familiar Western examples such as :-) are usually viewed sideways and emphasize the mouth. Japanese kaomoji are normally upright and often make the eyes the most expressive feature. Emoji are different again: they are encoded pictographs that a phone or computer generally draws as colored artwork. A kaomoji may include an emoji or decorative Unicode symbol, but its overall design remains a line of copyable text.

Search by what you want to communicate

The fastest approach is to search by intention rather than by symbol. Try words such as “happy,” “blush,” “hug,” “cat,” “sorry,” “birthday,” or “table flip.” The 162 starter faces include plain-English names and descriptive keywords. The complete collection is also searchable by its 542 source and starter topic labels; many specialist labels are romanized Japanese terms preserved from the source collection. Topic and text filters work together, so you can narrow a broad result without loading thousands of cards into the page at once.

Happy and celebration faces suit good news, thanks, and friendly reactions. Love and cute kaomoji add warmth or playful affection. Sad faces can express sympathy or disappointment, while angry designs range from a restrained glare to a dramatic table flip. Surprised and confused faces work well as reactions. Actions, greetings, animals, and sleepy designs communicate a recognizable situation even when no emotion word is present.

Copy the characters exactly as shown

Pressing Copy sends the exact visible character sequence to the browser clipboard. Fontgene does not turn the face into an image or add hidden attribution. Paste it into your destination with the usual keyboard shortcut or paste command. Long kaomoji may exceed a narrow card, so the preview can scroll horizontally instead of breaking the expression into misleading pieces. If a browser denies clipboard access, the face stays visible and selectable for manual copying.

Why spacing and symbols sometimes change after pasting

Unicode defines characters, not one universal drawing of every character. Your operating system, browser, messaging app, and chosen font decide how wide or tall each mark appears. A face may therefore look perfectly aligned on one phone and slightly uneven on another. Some older systems also lack newer symbols and may show an empty box. Simple faces usually travel most reliably; elaborate designs are more expressive but depend on broader font support. Preview important posts in the destination app before publishing.

Build a private favorites collection

The heart button stores only the entry's internal ID in this browser's local storage. That makes favorite filtering immediate and avoids sending a personal reaction list to Fontgene. Kaomoji favorites are deliberately separate from the fancy-font favorites used elsewhere on the site. The tradeoff is that local collections do not automatically follow you to another browser or device, and clearing this site's browser data removes them.

Match the face to the conversation

Text faces can soften a short message, make a joke easier to read, or supply tone that plain words lack. They can also feel overly casual in formal, serious, or accessibility-sensitive contexts. A screen reader may announce individual punctuation marks instead of interpreting the intended expression, so do not rely on a kaomoji as the only way to communicate essential information. Add ordinary words when clarity matters, and consider the customs and rules of the community where you post.

Kaomoji FAQ

Questions,
Answered.

What is a kaomoji?
A kaomoji is a text-based face or character built from Unicode letters, punctuation, and symbols. The word combines the Japanese terms for face and character. Unlike many Western emoticons, kaomoji are normally read upright rather than sideways.
How do I copy and paste a kaomoji?
Search or browse the library, then press Copy beside the face you want. Paste it into a message, profile, caption, document, or other text field. If clipboard permission is blocked, select the visible kaomoji and copy it manually.
What is the difference between kaomoji, emoticons, and emoji?
Kaomoji are a Japanese style of emoticon made from text characters, often with expressive eyes and an upright layout. Emoticon is the broader term for expressions made from text. Emoji are encoded pictographs that are usually rendered as colored images by the operating system.
Can I search by mood or meaning?
Yes. Search English words such as happy, cat, hug, sorry, party, sleepy, or confused. Twelve popular category buttons provide quick access, and the topic menu exposes all 542 searchable source and starter topics.
Where can I use copied kaomoji?
Kaomoji work in most places that accept Unicode text, including messaging apps, social profiles, captions, comments, documents, and notes. A destination may impose its own character limit or remove unusual symbols.
Why can a kaomoji look different after I paste it?
Each device and app chooses its own fonts and spacing rules. A symbol may therefore look slightly wider, narrower, or less aligned after pasting. The underlying Unicode characters remain the same even when their visual rendering changes.
How do Kaomoji favorites work?
Press the heart on any card to save that entry in your current browser. The Favorites filter shows your saved collection. These kaomoji favorites are separate from Fontgene's favorite font styles.
Does Fontgene upload or store my favorites?
No. Saved kaomoji IDs are kept in local browser storage on this device. They are not attached to an account or uploaded to Fontgene. Clearing site data or switching browsers removes access to that local collection.
Are these kaomoji free to use?
Yes. You may copy the text faces for ordinary personal or commercial communication. Individual Unicode characters are not images supplied under a separate Fontgene license, but the platform where you post still controls its own content and usage rules.
How many kaomoji are in this library?
Fontgene serves 36,103 unique usable faces assembled from 41,596 categorized source records plus the starter collection. Duplicate faces are merged, topic memberships are retained, and 37 malformed source records are excluded. The tool shows 48 cards at a time to keep the page responsive.
